The Human & the Artifical

We live in a world in which the language produced by machines is increasingly indistinguishable from that of humans, and in which humans increasingly treat each other –and ourselves– like machines. The Society for Humanistic Psychology (SHP) is inviting proposals that address the topics of lived human experience and artificiality using pluralistic and interdisciplinary ways of knowing. Topics and questions that presenters might address include:  

• Lived human experience: How do we safeguard the sacredness, singularity, and diversity of human experience in an artificial age?

• Artificiality as human-made: How do we understand artificial tools and creations, including technologies and experiences, as human-made? 

• Human-technology relationships: What happens when humans develop relationships with AI that are experienced as meaningful? 

• Technology and social justice: How do we address ways that AI amplifies social pathologies, including racism, homophobia, and transphobia?

• AI and psychology: What are the ethical and empirical implications when psychologists adopt AI in research, scholarship, and/or practice? What are the potential impacts of AI on the identity of psychology as a profession?

We invite proposals by humanistic psychologists, interdisciplinary researchers, experts by experience, and graduate students. Scientific, theoretical, philosophical, interdisciplinary, and creative approaches are welcomed.
